International Events

India and Britain also came together to battle the disease from 20th Sep to 6th Oct 08 through a Mega Art Show. Kathak exponent Shovana Narayan inaugurated an exhibition of "British Art in India with Friends" at Studio Vasant, Haus Khas Village, New Delhi.

Presenting paintingThe exhibition was organized by MKC Roko Cancer Charitable Trust in association with Xross-Poly Nation, UK . The show featured works by Graham Clarke (an ambassador of Kent), Nick Tidnam (RBA), Brian Lewiss, Tikki Gullands, Mike Hutchings, Cas Holmes and James Horton (VPRBA) - all British artists. The Indian artists include Victor Vijay Kumar, Alka Raguvanshi, Manoj Mantra, Sangetha K. Murthy, Kota Neelima, Baljit Chadha, Indu Tripathy, P.K. Roy, Ravi Gill and Sanjib Saha.

On 18th August, 2008 -  Roko cancer participated in the Ability Fest –On the spot painting competition for Physically Challenged Children organised by ART MALL ,India’s largest art Gallery at Moti Nagar, New Delhi. An initiative of Naren Bhiku Ram Jain, Director Bhiku Ram Jain Foundation who has also partnered with Roko Cancer Campaign. About 200 children participated in the competition. They were distributed Roko Cancer T-Shirt’s and Caps. The winners were awarded certificates.

Presenting paintingOn 16th June, 2008 - Roko Cancer Campaign launched its campaign in Maharashtra in an event at Taj Land’s End, Mumbai by showcasing First of its kind fully equipped Mobile Breast Cancer Detection Unit. The Chief Guest for the event was Pamela Chopra, Champion Roko Cancer Campaign. The event was also graced by Priya Dutt, Champion Roko Cancer Campaigned. R. A Badwe, Chief Surgical Oncologist, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Mustaq Nadiadwala, Eminent Film Producer, Devieka Bhojwani, Team of doctors from Tata Memorial Hospital. Roko Cancer Awareness Films were screened. The event was covered by Print and Electronic Media.

On 15th June, 2008 - In a ceremony, Isha Bhandari, Director Operations, India presented Roko Cancer Memento to Pamela Chopra at her residence in Mumbai for her support to the campaign.

On 4th May 08 - The Roko Cancer Trust held a reception for Mr. Jeremy Hughes, CEO Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Institute, UK at PARK BALUCHI restaurant. Mr. Jeremy Hughes visited the camp prior to the event. The reception was held by Mr. Prithipal Sawhney, CEO Park Baluchi. The guest who graced the occasion were Shovana Narayan, Eminent Kathak Dancer and other invited guest.

On 17th February, 2008 - Roko cancer Trust participated in the Fifth International Symposium on Genetics, Health and Disease at Amritsar. On the occasion Mr. A. P. S Chawla, Chairman MKC Trust addressed the symposium. A film on Breast Cancer Awareness was screened and a presentation on Roko Cancer Campaign was given by the Chairman.

On 12th January, 2008 - Roko Cancer, an initiative of the London based MKC Trust aiming to build mass awareness and help detection of Breast Cancer, launched a new state of the art Mobile Breast Cancer Detection Unit in Delhi. The launch was held at one of Roko’s largest cancer detection camps held at India Habitat Centre, in collaboration with numerous other NGO’s. The day long camp included self examination seminars, physical examination and consultation by leading physicians. There were cancer awareness sessions and free on the spot mammograms conducted at the camp and the reports were given there and then. Roko held a small ceremony in the early half of the day to felicitate the supporters of the movement and breast cancer survivors. 

The morning function was inaugurated by Mrs. Pamela Chopra, which also marked the premier of “LOVE FOR LIFE”, a short film featuring Mrs. Chopra. Another key highlight of the event was a beautiful dance recital by acclaimed danseuse and Roko Champion Shovana Narayan. Also present were MR. Roko Cancer’s ongoing campaign reaches Tihar Jail, Delhi, and Kolkatta - The trust with its Roko Cancer Campaign recently visited Tihar jail and organised a campaign on Breast Cancer Awareness to educate the prisoners about this deadly disease and the potential to overcome it by early and timely detection.
Moreover, the trust continues to hold numerous other campaigns on different locations to spread its message and raise awareness amongst the masses.
At an event organised on 21st June 2006, a presentation by MKC Trust was attended by 55 NGOs from and across Delhi, and the charity had then been endorsed by India Habitat. The trust later worked hand in hand with other NGOs for the breast cancer awareness programme.
On 4th July 2006, MKC Trust extended its campaign on Cancer Awareness and Prevention, held at Federation House organised by FICCI ladies Organisation. Remember Me- a Roko Cancer Campaign film on breast cancer awareness was filmed.
On 27th August 2006, an awareness talk and counselling sessions were conducted at Aravali Public School, South Delhi under the Stree Shakti Programme. The trust has been promoting various awareness camps, presentations and seminars in and around Delhi (Mandawali, Madanpur Khadar, Sangam Vihar, Uttam Nagar) as they intend to launch another Mobile Breast Cancer Unit for Delhi and Haryana in early 2007. The camps were attended by the Principal Medical Advisor to MKC Trust, Dr S R Sahni; Consultant Breast Surgeon, Tutor, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, who examined the suspected cases at the camp locations.
July witnessed a number of campaigns in UK by the MKC Trust as a part of its Roko (means Stop) Cancer Campaign, one being the Breast Cancer Awareness Programme held at Kanchan,s Banqueting Suite, Gants Hill; where Mr. Stephen Timms, Minister for Treasury was the chief guest. The event was graced by other dignitaries like Baroness Sandeep Verma, Nikki Aneja Walia, Juliette Foster etc. The programme has been able to generate substantial funds for future and was well supported by the numerous dignitaries present on the evening.
On July 27th 2006, another Breast Cancer Awareness campaign was held at the Rumi’s, Chelsea with audio visual aids where Gujarati community of UK, spearheaded by Preeya Kalidas of ‘Bombay Dreams’ fame initiated a fund raising activity for a Mobile Breast Cancer Unit to be launched in Gujarat, India. Similar Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign for early detection and cure amongst diverse communities, was held at Merstham Tandoori, Surrey on Sept 27th 2006. Another campaign is scheduled for 16th Nov 2006, to be held in Leicester.
Roko Cancer launches Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in Kolkata in association with Omkarnath Movement.
After successfully launching Breast Cancer Awareness Campaigns in Punjab and Delhi and introducing fully operational first ever Mobile Breast Cancer Detection Unit in India, MKC trust is all set to extend its Roko Cancer campaign in eastern India with the launching of Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in Kolkata on 15th Oct 2006, in association with Omkarnath Movement.
Various dignitaries including the British Dy. High Commissioner to India, Mr. Simon Wilson, Baroness Sandeep Verma, former Dy High Commisioner Mark Runacres, Dr Manas Bhuiyan and numerous political and religious figures like Kinkar Vitthal Ramanula Maharaj, President Omkarnath Movement, and intellectuals attended the launching of the campaign.
The trust intends to hold numerous breast cancer awareness campaigns in and around Kolkata to spread its message amongst the masses. According to Baroness Sandeep Verma, who has been a champion of the charity, voiced her active support for the cause, “ I am a very very happy person today”, was her initial reaction when she describes the efforts taken by the charity to bring empowerment to womenfolk in working towards taking care of their own health. Mr. Simon Wilson also highlighted the initiative taken by a NRI (Mr. A P S Chawla, Chairman, Roko Cancer) and emphasised the importance of participation of UK and British Council in collaborating with India for this noble cause.
